On top of Ford's Dearborn Truck Plant sits a 10.4-acre living roof, at the time the largest in the world. This infographic shows that the roof is only the start of the story.
It follows rainwater through the whole system in 5 steps: into 4 kinds of sedum, through layers of mineral wool and drainage, down to stone basins under porous parking lots, and finally into man-made wetlands. About 48 hours after a rain, the water reaches nearby streams and rivers, filtered and clean.
It's a good example of how a piece of engineering can become a visual story anyone can follow.
